What is a multiple?
A multiple of a number is the result of multiplying that number by an integer (whole number). In other words - just like times tables!
e.g. multiples of 2 = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, ... , 20, 22, 24 and so on. If one number is a multiple of another, it will divide exactly with no remainder. Short division and knowledge of times tables are both very useful to help you to work this out. e.g. 12 ÷ 2 = 6, so 12 is a multiple of 2. But 12 ÷ 5 = 2.4, so 12 is not a multiple of 5. You can also use divisibility tests to work out if one number is a multiple of another. |
