## Equivalent fractions

Finding equivalent fractions is an important skill for most other work with fractions, particularly adding and subtracting fractions.
Two fractions are equivalent if they represent the same sized portion of the original. If I cut a pizza in half and shared between me and a friend, we would have 1/2 a pizza each. If I cut each half in half again, the pizza would be in quarters. We would each have two quarter-sized pieces, or 2/4 of the pizza. 1/2 and 2/4 represent the same amount of pizza - the only difference is the size of the slices and how many slices we get each. |

Fraction answers should always be written
in their simplest form where possible. This means that the numerator and denominator should be as small as they can be. In my pizza example, this means I should say I have 1/2 of the pizza, rather than 2/4.If you are working with a calculator, it will automatically write a fraction in its simplest form - just input the fraction into your calculator, and press the equals button. |
